Meanwhile, Dato Seri Laila Jasa Dr Babu Sukumaran, the Medical Oncologist at the Brunei Cancer Centre was invited at yesterday’s talk to deliver his insights on breast cancer.
“In Brunei Darussalam, breast cancer is usually diagnosed in women between the ages of 40 and 49 while in other countries, it is usually diagnosed in women who are in their 60’s. This is a worrying trend as majority of the women that being diagnosed with breast cancer are women in pre-menopause and around 20 per cent of them are childbearing age, young and active group."
During yesterday’s talk, DSLJ Dr Babu also elaborates on risk factors that might lead to breast cancer. Women who are carrying the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are accounted to have five to 10 per cent of breast cancer cases and have 80 per cent chance of developing breast cancer at some point during their life.
History of abnormal breast biopsies or previous history of breast cancer might become one of the leading factors for this non-communicable disease.
At the talk, the attendees also had the opportunity to learn how to perform a self-examination for checking symptoms of breast cancer.
It is hoped that with the talk, women would increase their awareness as well as knowledge on breast cancer and at the same time, they will learn effective ways of preventing cancer before it happens.
