PHYSIOTHERAPIST Alan Robertson of Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) presented a talk to a group of medical staff on back pain management at a seminar last Friday. His lecture focused on a subject that has remained one of the most common complaints of pain in people.

Entitled "The Management of Back Pain", teh talk was delivered as part of the JPMC Rehabilitation Department's 'Spinal Programme' which planned to raise the awareness of back pain management. The talk described back pain from established definitions, through various stages of the condition to diagnosis and remedy.

Back pain, usually originates from the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the spine, According to Robertson, surgery is rarely needed to treat back pain.

Back pain is one of the most common medical conditions known to man. About 80 per cent of all adults will suffer from back pain and a large proportion of those will have absenteeism from work and their daily routine resulting in a costly affair.

The JPMC Rehabilitation Department has begun gathering evidence to support the latest research into Back Pain Management and has enlisted the expertise of the University of Michigan's (USA) most eminent Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Professor Dr Andrew J Haig.

The back pain project is based on Professor Haig's FASTBACK programme which has won him great honour in the USA.

JPMC's speaker Alan Robertson was delighted to announce that Professor Dr Haig is to arrive in Brunei Darussalam on January 20 which will include influential planning meetings and three days of specialised clinics for the clients of JPMC. He will also be attended by their top back pain specialist physiotherapist, Julia Okuly, who will be working alongside therapists at JPMC for a few months.
