Screening for Early Breast Cancer Detection

Feb 01, 2020

1 February 2020 – Breast cancer is one of the primary and leading cause of cancer in the Sultanate of Brunei. Approximately 130 women out of 510 cancer cases were diagnosed in their lifetime from breast cancer and 24 women out of 510 cases died from breast cancer. Clinically, performing Mammogram or Ultrasound Breast is the recommended way to detect breast cancer.

Mammogram is a screening tool for early detection of breast cancer and gold standard screening according to World Health Organization (WHO) for women aged 40 and above. Performing it annually starting at age 40 is the best strategy to avert an early breast cancer death. While ultrasound can be as effective as mammogram in detecting breast cancer in women, and even more accurate in some cases. Mammogram is still advisable to screen for tumors and other breast abnormalities.
