10 June 2017 – The Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) was accredited recently and was awarded its 2nd Joint Commission International (JCI) award, a prestigious global recognized healthcare organization that aims to improve safety and quality of patient care.
The Jerudong Park Medical Centre maintained its status as the only hospital in Brunei Darussalam to have JCI standard. Yesterday was a certificate handover by Yang Mulia Dato Paduka Dr Hj Muhammad Amin Liew Abdullah in his capacity as Chairman of JPMC to Yang Mulia Dato Paduka Dr Hj Md Isham bin Hj Jaafar, the Executive Director & Medical Director of JPMC at Darussalam Asset office at the Ministry of Finance building at Jalan Commonwealth. The handover ceremony was witnessed by Senior Management from JPMC as well as representatives from various chapter leaders of the JCI 5th edition, headed by Ms Chung Yea Fui, Director of Nursing in her capacity as JCI Coordinator and Jeffry Damit, Quality Management Manager in his capacity as Deputy JCI Coordinator.
In his remarks, the Chairman of JPMC noted that JPMC has been instrumental in starting the concept of accreditation in the health industry in particular and commended the Management's progressive and active roles in putting quality and safety throughout the hospital at the forefront of its operations. "The entire process to meet JCI standards and to maintain through obtaining our 2nd accreditation has been challenging but rewarding. At the end of the day, it's the staff that makes quality and safety happen. Having The Joint Commission International Gold Seal Of Quality does not mean we are perfect. It just means we are constantly and consistently looking for ways to close the gaps and proactively improving ourselves." said Dato Paduka Dr Hj Md Isham bin Hj Jaafar during the certificate handover ceremony yesterday.
The Joint Commission International (JCI) Headquarters in Chicago, USA, appointed 2 Health International Surveyors with Ms Ann Watkins leading. The entire process for JCI accreditation took 5 days which covered 8 chapters for patient safety and 6 chapters organizational and facility management of which JPMC have total of more than 1200 measurable elements requirement to be met.
It was the second accreditation JPMC had received from the Joint Commission International, its first coming back in 2014.
JCI is an accreditation standard and survey process which evaluates patient safety and the quality of health care provided by medical institutions. They promote rigorous standards of care and are partnered with hospitals, clinics and academic medical centres in more than 100 countries, providing them with solutions to achieve optimal performance.
Currently, over 800 organisations have received the Gold Seal of Approval, successfully completing the 10-step accreditation process, which typically takes between 18 and 24 months.
