Miss Hjh Helena POKSJ DP Haji Hurairah is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon specializing in general adult ophthalmology, pediatric ophthalmology, strabismus and complex cataract surgery.
She received her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from King’s College London GKT School of Medical Education in 2006. Miss Helena completed her rigorous general ophthalmology residency training at the London Deanery School of Ophthalmology, which included working at renowned institutions such as Moorfield’s Eye Hospital, and completed a 1-year pediatric ophthalmology & strabismus fellowship at St Thomas’ Hospital in London.
She is the President of the Brunei Ophthalmology Society, a council member for the ASEAN Ophthalmology Society and represents Brunei as an Associate Regional Secretary on the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology council.
Miss Helena is currently the lead of the Children’s Eye Service in Brunei Darussalam and is an outreach ophthalmologist for the Brunei Flying Medical Service. She is a volunteer faculty ophthalmologist for Orbis International and has participated in prevention of blindness programs in Mongolia and Chile.
Her special interests are international and outreach ophthalmology, myopia prevention and graduate medical education. As a medical educator, she is an Associate Training Programme Director for the Foundation Training Programme for newly graduated doctors and an elected member of the Postgraduate Medicine Advisory and Training Board (PGATB).
She is passionate about providing her patients with the highest quality of eye care and adopts a holistic approach to patient care.
Miss Helena has recently received the 2020 Commonwealth Points of Light Award for her role in the design and creation of child-friendly personal protective equipment during the Covid-19 pandemic.
