18th October 2024 –October is menopause awareness month, with World Menopause Day observed annually on October 18th. This global initiative is dedicated to breaking the stigma around menopause and improving the health and wellbeing of women by raising awareness about menopausal symptoms and the available support options.
This year’s World Menopause Day theme, “Menopause Hormone Therapy,” was at the heart of the event hosted by Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC). In line with this theme, JPMC organized a Post Menopausal Health symposium at the Radisson Hotel, aimed at creating a supportive environment for women to learn more about their health during the post-menopausal stage, explore the latest hormone therapy options, and engage directly with healthcare professionals.
The event was graced by Pengiran Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Zety Sufina binti Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Sani, Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy (FISCAL) in her capacity as Deputy Chairman of JPMC, as the Guest of Honour. In her speech, Pengiran Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Zetty, highlighted the significance of raising awareness about menopause, stating, “Menopause is a natural, yet profound life transition that marks the beginning of a new chapter for women. Despite being a universal experience, it remains one of the least discussed aspects of women’s health.” She emphasized the need for education and support, urging, “We must ensure that women have access to accurate information, compassionate healthcare, and supportive environments to navigate menopause with dignity and confidence.” She also called for breaking the stigma surrounding menopause and encouraged the inclusion of men in the conversation to foster understanding and support during this important life stage.
The event featured an engaging and educational talk titled “Beyond the Pause: Rediscovering Wellness”, led by Dr. Chitra Karat, Head of Department & Consultant of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine Unit of JPMC. Dr. Chitra highlighted the importance of open conversations about menopause and the need for women to understand the changes they may experience, as well as the therapeutic options available, particularly menopause hormone therapy.
The event attracted more than 100 women, including members of the public as well as special invitees from the Halaqah Muslimah International and the International Women’s Club (IWC), Brunei Darussalam. Attendees also participated in an interactive Q&A session, where they had the opportunity to ask questions and share their experiences in a supportive and understanding environment. The event further included consultations with qualified nurses, offering personalized advice on post-menopausal lifestyle and wellness. In addition to the informative sessions, attendees participated in engaging activities and a lucky draw.
JPMC’s celebration of World Menopause Day reflects its ongoing commitment to promoting women’s health and ensuring that women in the community have access to the resources they need during this important life transition.
