10th August 2024 – The Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) hosted a Public Breastfeeding Forum on Saturday, 10th August 2024 at VIP Hall, Level 4, The Rizqun International Hotel. The event, titled “Empowering Your Journey: Antenatal Care and Breastfeeding” was held in conjunction with World Breastfeeding Week annually celebrated from 1st August to 7th August. This year’s theme “Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support For All”, underscores the importance of inclusive support for breastfeeding.
The forum featured a presentation by Dr. Hajah Siti Khadijah Ismail, Deputy Head and Consultant of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at JPMC. Dr Hajah Siti highlighted the critical role that antenatal care and breastfeeding play in ensuring a healthy pregnancy and infancy. She emphasized the significant benefits these practices offer to both mothers and babies, contributing to a healthier start in life. By staying informed and seeking appropriate support, mothers can enhance their journey and achieve the best possible outcomes for themselves and their babies.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breastfeeding is essential for optimal growth and development. Evidence indicates that breastfed infants tend to score higher on intelligence tests, have lower risks of obesity and diabetes; and are better protected against infections. Moreover, breastfeeding offers significant benefits to mothers, including a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancers. Overall, breastfeeding has long-term positive impacts on public health, contributing to healthier populations and workforces.
The forum also featured an interactive segment where experienced mothers shared their personal experiences and insights on antenatal care and breastfeeding. The event concluded with a lucky draw, kindly sponsored by Mothercare and Chicco. Attendees were also invited to observe a live demonstration of antenatal care and breastfeeding techniques conducted by our certified nurses.
