Maxillofacial, Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Centre (MFPRSC)

The Centre for Maxillofacial, Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery was a small department when it was established in 1993.

Establishment

In 1993, the centre commenced the state wide Cleft Lip and Palate Deformities service in collaboration with the Orthodontists, Speech Therapist and Dentists with paediatric interest. During the year 1993-1994 wearing seatbelts were not compulsory in the country and the primary focus of the department was on reconstructing faces injured or badly damaged by road tragic accidents as these were many. From the very onset, the unit commenced services to Brunei citizens and residents in various aspects of Head and Neck Surgery. Salivary gland surgery became a forte of the unit. In the same year, Orthognathic Surgery and Bone Anchored Craniofacial Prostheses and Hearing Aid service came to existence in coordination with Orthodontists, Audiologists and Otorhinolaryngologists.

The centre had the distinguished presence of Professor Patrick Boulter, Past President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and late Professor Dr Emil Steinhauser, Chief of Maxillofacial and Facial Plastic operations in University of Erlangen in the first week of the opening of the centre. The centre provided a comprehensive spectrum of care in this specialty for the citizens of Brunei Darussalam and its residents. The department started with only one specialist surgeon with no trained nurses in this area of specialization. In 1998, the department started training nurses specialised in Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery accredited by the National Accreditation Council of Brunei Darussalam. Since the inception of this course until to date, 19 specialty nurses have trained in the field of Cranio-Maxillofacial, Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery with some trained in Microvascular Surgery and Neurosurgery Nursing. These Specialist Nurses were trained in leading departments in Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery under world renowned Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgeons. In early 2000, services in Facial aesthetic surgery commenced. In late 2004, the department took over the management of Head & Neck Burns in Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital. With passage of time, the Department continued to evolve and offered a wider scope services

In 2007, the centre introduced Microvascular Surgical Services and its application in Head and Neck Reconstruction. In 2007, the centre commenced to provide services in Craniofacial surgery in collaboration with Dr David Staffenberg, USA and the neurosurgeons at RIPAS Hospital. As number of cases increased and years passed by, Laser Treatment Services commenced in 2008. The department continued to provide its services and uplift the delivery of quality healthcare services to the residents and citizens of Brunei Darussalam. In this changing world, technology and innovation is at its peak. The department started its own 3-D printing in 2015 providing a well-coordinated and planned surgical procedures to patients. The construction of a fully functional CranioMaxillofacial Prosthetic Laboratory intensified its state-of-the-art services in the specialty. Since commencement of the centre, surgical operations for more than 500 cleft lip and palate deformities, 600 tumour cases have been carried out ranging from salivary glands, oral cancers, thyroid cancers to complex skull base tumours and skin cancers of the face, scalp, head and neck region. The centre continue to expand its scope of services including Head and Neck Surgical Oncology except nasopharynx, hypopharynx and larynx. In June 2016, our centre commenced operations in a newly built centre adjacent to main Radiology Department in the ground floor of Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital. This state of the art centre houses our services.
