03 March 2025 – In conjunction with World Stroke Day, Jerudong Park Medical Centre through the Brunei Neuroscience Stroke & Rehabilitation Centre (BNSRC) conducted stroke awareness talks in Belait District at Dewan Bandaran Kuala Belait, and a session in Tutong District at Dewan Kemasyarakatan Tutong as part of its continued commitment to strengthening community health education across the nation.

The sessions were attended by Penghulu, Village Heads, heads of departments, representatives from the public sector and non-governmental organisations, as well as participants form the Senior Citizens Activity Centres. The presence of community leaders reflects a shared effort to raise awareness on stroke prevention and early intervention within the community.

In Belait District, the session was delivered by Dr Chan Guan Choon, Medical Officer, while the Tutong session was presented by Dr Albert Lim. Both talks were conducted under the theme “Understanding Hypertensive Haemorrhagic Stroke: A Silent Killer,” highlighting the risks associated with uncontrolled hypertension, the importance of recognising stroke symptoms using the BEFAST approach, available treatment options, and the immediate actions required during a suspected stroke.

Participants were also guided on practical measures to better manage blood pressure and reduce their overall risk, followed by guided simulation activities conducted by the Rehabilitation Department that allowed them to experience first-hand some of the physical and visual limitations faced by stroke patients.

The engagement throughout the sessions reflected the importance of the topic within the community. As shared by one attendee, “The activities helped us understand what stroke patients go through, and it reminded us how important it is to take care of our health before it is too late.”

Through these district engagements, JPMC continues to reinforce its commitment to preventive healthcare by empowering communities with essential knowledge and strengthening public awareness on timely stroke response.
