04 February 2026 – In conjunction with World Cancer Day 2026, The Brunei Cancer Centre (TBCC) of Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) came together with patients, caregivers, families, healthcare professionals, partners, and young participants under the global theme “United by Unique”, reaffirming the belief that while every cancer journey is deeply personal, strength is found through unity, compassion, and shared support.

The World Cancer Day initiative brought together the Brunei community in a meaningful programme centred on the concept of healing through the arts. The programme highlighted creative expression as a supportive and therapeutic approach that complements holistic cancer care, while recognising the resilience of patients and the dedication of caregivers who walk alongside them.

The event was graced by the Guest of Honour, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar, Minister of Health, who is also the Chairman and Executive Director of JPMC.

Welcoming remarks were delivered by Yang Mulia Datin Dr Hjh Noraslinah Hj Ramlee, Consultant and Head of Early Detection and Cancer Prevention Services, and Chairperson of World Cancer Day 2026. In her remarks, Yang Mulia Datin Dr Hjh Noraslinah emphasised the importance of recognising individuality while standing together as a community. She noted that, “This theme reminds us that while cancer may affect many of us, every journey is deeply personal.”

Highlighting innovative approaches in patient support, she spoke on the benefits of Art Therapy: “Art Therapy is not just expressive, it is evidence-based. Studies have shown that structured art therapy can significantly reduce anxiety, depression, and emotional distress, while improving patients’ overall wellbeing and quality of life.” In line with this, TBCC currently runs ongoing art therapy sessions for its patients, helping to foster social connection, empathy, and a more supportive care environment among patients, families, and caregivers.

A central highlight of the programme was the patient sharing session, where cancer survivors shared personal reflections on their treatment journeys, the care they received, and life beyond cancer. Their stories offered powerful reminders of courage, hope, and gratitude, reflecting the spirit of United by Unique through diverse experiences united by shared strength.

In support of emotional well-being, the programme also incorporated expressive arts presentations offered as gestures of appreciation and solidarity. These included therapeutic instrumental and choral performances by Expression Music Academy, as well as by JPMC staff members. Presented with sensitivity and respect, these expressions reflected encouragement, unity, and collective care through art.

The programme also included art therapy sessions for patients, which provide a safe and supportive space for reflection and emotional expression. Complementing this initiative was a children’s art competition, aimed at raising cancer awareness among younger generations. Through colouring and drawing, children were encouraged to learn about empathy, kindness, and the importance of supporting individuals affected by cancer.

Winners of the art competition were recognised during the programme, celebrating creativity, participation, and meaningful expression. Selected artworks were featured in an accompanying art exhibition, which guests were invited to view following the event. The exhibition served as a reflective space, sharing stories and perspectives conveyed through art by both patients and young participants.

The programme also acknowledged the valued support of sponsors and partners, whose contributions made this World Cancer Day initiative possible and reflected a shared commitment to patient-centred care and community well-being.

Through coming together for World Cancer Day 2026, JPMC and The Brunei Cancer Centre stood United by Unique, honouring individual cancer journeys while strengthening collective care, guided by the belief that healing can be supported through compassion, creativity, and community.
