BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 28 August 2026 – Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) marked an important milestone in the development of neurorehabilitation services in Brunei Darussalam with the launch of the Borneo Neurorehabilitation Workshop (BNRWE), hosted by the Rehabilitation Department of the Brunei Neuroscience Stroke and Rehabilitation Centre (BNSRC) of JPMC.
The inaugural four-day workshop, the first dedicated neurorehabilitation workshop of its scale to be held in Brunei Darussalam, brings together local and international experts to strengthen professional capacity, promote knowledge exchange and explore contemporary approaches to neurorehabilitation.
The launching ceremony was officiated by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar, Minister of Health, in his capacity as Chairman and Executive Director of JPMC.
Also in attendance were Yang Mulia Awang Haji Adi Ihram bin Dato Paduka Haji Mahmud, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Deputy Permanent Secretaries of the Ministry of Health, and senior officials from the Ministry of Health and JPMC.
The workshop comes at a time of increasing demand for specialised rehabilitation services in Brunei Darussalam. At BNSRC, the number of patients undergoing inpatient neurorehabilitation increased from 181 in 2024 to 211 in 2025, highlighting the need for continued investment in specialised expertise, workforce development and innovative approaches to care.
Neurorehabilitation plays a vital role in helping individuals affected by neurological conditions regain function, independence and quality of life. As rehabilitation needs are often complex, care requires a multidisciplinary approach involving rehabilitation medicine, nursing and allied health professionals, with the individual patient remaining at the centre.
In her welcoming remarks, Dato’ Dr. Zaliha binti Omar, Chairman of the Borneo Neurorehabilitation Workshop, emphasised the importance of person-centred care, multimodal intervention and collaborative teamwork, while highlighting the role of education and innovation in strengthening rehabilitation services.
The workshop features 23 speakers from Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Singapore and Italy, with more than 70 participants from Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh and the United States, participating both physically and online.
Its scientific programme covers contemporary areas including evidence-based neurorehabilitation, clinical neurorehabilitation and Complementary Integrative Rehabilitation Medicine (CIRM), providing participants with opportunities to engage with current evidence, clinical approaches and emerging developments in the field. The regional and international participation also allows local professionals to benchmark practice,
exchange experiences and strengthen networks across Borneo and beyond.
Innovation is further highlighted through dedicated industry sessions and an exhibition, featuring exhibitors from Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia and Singapore. The sessions provide deeper insights into emerging rehabilitation technologies and their clinical applications, while the exhibition showcases developments including lower-limb gait rehabilitation equipment, assistive and rehabilitation technologies, and approaches exploring the incorporation of plants and herbs as complementary elements in patient recovery and rehabilitation.
Together, these components demonstrate the evolving role of technology and innovation in rehabilitation, while reinforcing that technology remains an enabler of care, with the patient at the centre of clinical decision-making and multidisciplinary rehabilitation.
The development of BNRWE reflects the progression of rehabilitation services within JPMC and the wider healthcare landscape in Brunei Darussalam. BNSRC continues to strengthen its role as a centre of excellence in neuroscience, stroke and rehabilitation, while JPMC remains committed to advancing clinical excellence, education, innovation and service development.
The workshop also forms part of JPMC’s longer-term aspiration to develop an Educational Hub for Rehabilitation, creating opportunities for healthcare professionals to learn, teach, research, innovate and contribute to the continued development of rehabilitation services suited to Brunei and the wider region.
The Borneo Neurorehabilitation Workshop represents an important step in strengthening Brunei Darussalam’s neurorehabilitation capabilities and regional partnerships, while supporting the continued evolution of rehabilitation towards a more specialised, multidisciplinary and innovative model of care.
