United Against Cancer: World Cancer Day 2025, Empowers Unique Voices

9 February 2025 – The Brunei Cancer Centre (TBCC), Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) officially commemorated World Cancer Day 2025 under the transformative theme, “United by Unique.” The event took place on Sunday, 9th February 2025, at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien. Present as the Guest of Honour, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohd Isham Bin Hj Jaafar, Minister of Health who is also the Chairman of the Board of Directors of JPMC.

United by Unique is the theme for World Cancer Day’s campaign stretching from 2025-2027 that carries with it a powerful reminder on the importance of people-centred cancer care, placing individuals and their unique journeys at the heart of treatment and support. The event underscored the significance of treating not just the disease but the person, promoting the value of social connections and community involvement in improving cancer treatment outcomes.

It featured a Walk, Run & Cycle event, inviting participants and the public from all walks of life to show their support and solidarity in the fight against cancer. However, due to heavy rain and adverse weather conditions, the walk and cycle portions of the event had to be cancelled to ensure the safety of all participants. Despite this, the event continued with great enthusiasm, with attendees engaging in other planned activities.

During his welcoming remarks, Dr Hj Muhd Syafiq bin Abdullah, Director of TBCC as Chairperson of the World Cancer Day 2025 , highlighted the significance of this year’s theme, stating, “This theme reminds us that every cancer patient has their own unique needs and stories—stories of sorrow, pain, healing, and resilience. It is essential that we approach cancer care with empathy, fairness, and personalised treatment.”

He also emphasised the importance of cancer awareness and prevention, urging the public to take proactive steps. “We can all contribute to cancer prevention by undergoing early screenings, educating ourselves about cancer, and spreading awareness within our families and communities. Most importantly, we must adopt a healthy lifestyle by maintaining a balanced diet and staying active,” he added.

The event featured thematic booths offering resources on cancer prevention, screening, wellness, and more. Among the engaging activities organised during the day was a fitness challenge hosted by local gym vendors and an exhibition showcasing cancer-related services—such as cancer rehabilitation, head and neck screening, and national cancer screening initiatives—were also part of the programme.

The 10 km run saw fierce competition, with Mohd Hakim Danish clinching first place in the men’s category with a time of 34 minutes and 39 seconds, followed by Mohd Amirul Hamdi bin Jamil, and Udaya Pulami in second and third place respectively. In the women’s category, Nor Diyanah bte Siew emerged victorious with a time of 50 minutes and 33 seconds, with Shazana Hamirol taking second place and Nor Sajidah Hj Moheider at third place.

The event was made possible through the generous contributions of a committed group of sponsors and partners, whose support has been instrumental in advancing cancer care and benefiting the community. The event was proudly supported by Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD), DKSH BRN Sdn Bhd, Zuellig Pharma, Brunei AstraZeneca, D’Sunlit Sdn Bhd, Sehat Water, Hui Huang Enterprise (C1000), Massutera Engineering Sdn Bhd was the Commemoration Partner.

JPMC extends its sincere gratitude to all sponsors and partners for their invaluable support. Their collective commitment plays a crucial role in raising awareness, providing vital assistance, and advancing cancer care within the community.

The event inspired the community to engage in open discussions about cancer, ensuring that individuals’ personal stories and experiences remained at the heart of cancer care. Healthcare professionals and patients shared insights into people-centred care, emphasising the importance of listening to patients’ needs and treating them as individuals rather than focusing solely on their diagnosis.

JPMC remains dedicated to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for those affected by cancer, with the “United by Unique” theme at the core of all activities during World Cancer Day 2025.
