2nd February 2025 – Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) proudly announces a historic achievement in Brunei Darussalam’s healthcare landscape: the successful completion of the nation’s first-ever liver transplant from a living donor.
The groundbreaking procedure conducted on 1st February 2025 involved a 35-year-old daughter who is the donor who generously provided a portion her their liver to her 59-year-old father as the recepient. Both individuals are in stable condition and continue to recover under close medical supervision at JPMC.
This milestone not only underscores JPMC’s capabilities in performing complex, advanced surgical procedures but also marks a significant step forward for Brunei’s healthcare sector. Previously, liver transplants required overseas treatment, placing financial and emotional strain on patients and their families. With this successful operation, Brunei has demonstrated its ability to provide specialized transplant care locally, improving patient recovery outcomes while reducing medical costs for the nation. The surgery was led by Dr. Palat Balachandran, alongside a highly skilled team of specialists. We thank Dr Taufique Ahmed, Visiting Consultant, Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, JPMC for preparing the patient and donor for this transplant surgery.
Dr. Meera Sahib Kabeer, Chief Medical Officer of JPMC, expressed his pride in the achievement, “This is a remarkable milestone for JPMC and Brunei’s medical community. The expertise, precision, and dedication demonstrated by our team reflect the high standards of care we uphold. We are pleased to report that both the donor and recipient are recovering well. This success paves the way for future advancements in organ transplantation within the country, ultimately saving more lives.”

This accomplishment also aligns with the vision of our Health Minister, Yang Berhormat Dato Dr Isham to make Brunei self-sufficient in healthcare and promote medical tourism. This success would not have been possible without the continued support of His Majesty’s Government, which has played a vital role in strengthening the nation’s healthcare sector. We would also like to acknowledge Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr. Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar, Minister of Health, for his support, guidance and leadership in advancing medical capabilities in Brunei.
This achievement further strengthens JPMC’s position as a leading healthcare provider in the region and highlights Brunei’s growing role in the global medical tourism industry. JPMC is committed to building a sustainable program that will benefit many more patients in the future. With state-of-the-art facilities and highly trained professionals, JPMC continues to advance healthcare excellence, offering cutting-edge treatments to both local and international patients.
