18 January 2021 – The Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) once again has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for the 3rd time, first for any healthcare provider in the country. The accreditation is a symbol of quality that reflects JPMC’s commitment to constantly improve the quality of patient care and enhancing patient safety. The Joint Commission based in the Chicago suburb of Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois, is an independent non-profit group and one of the most prestigious in the world that is involved in accrediting and certifying hospitals for the quality of their services.
The Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) became the first hospital in Brunei Darussalam to receive the Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation back in 2014 and was re-accredited for the second time in 2017.
The Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) maintained its accreditation recently and was awarded its 3rd Joint Commission International (JCI) award by the American-based body by demonstrating continuous compliance with its internationally recognized criteria. In line with one of the strategic priorities of JPMC, to provide quality service delivery, patient safety is always at the core of all the services provided. Thus, the JCI accreditation further strengthen and improve the safety culture and quality of patient care.
In his remarks, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr. Hj Mohd Isham bin Hj Jaafar, Minister of Health in his capacity as Chairman and Executive Director of JPMC said, “The JCI accreditation is the ‘Gold’ standard for any healthcare provider when it comes to maintaining a high level of patient care and safety. The management ensures that the procedures, policies, and resources are in place to ensure healthcare worker’s safety in all areas of the organization”. Yang Berhomat Dato further explained that the JCI accreditation process is designed to create a culture of safety and quality within ourselves and provides assurance that the standards, training, and processes used to survey the performance of healthcare organizations meet the highest international benchmark.
The Medical Director of JPMC, Dr. Meera Sahib Kabeer added having a gold seal does not mean we are flawless. It just means we are consistently looking for ways to close the gaps and proactively improving ourselves. The JCI provides numerous valuable resources to help JPMC sustain our continued compliance with quality and patient safety standards.
The 5-days virtual survey was conducted by two (2) Health International Surveyors, led by Ms. Diane Sanders and Dr. Ken Waxman, both from United States of America. Every survey is to ensure the hospital complies with the patient safety goals, its mission to continuously improve health care for the public and providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value.
