15 August 2026 – Observed annually on 25 July, World IVF Day commemorates the birth of the world’s first baby conceived through in vitro fertilisation (IVF), marking a milestone that transformed fertility treatment and reproductive medicine worldwide. In conjunction with the global observance, Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC), through its Reproductive Medicine Unit, organised Hope Beyond the Horizon, a public forum to increase public awareness of the
availability, accessibility, and advancements of IVF treatment in Brunei Darussalam.
The forum brought together members of the public, healthcare professionals and invited guests to encourage informed conversations about infertility, a medical condition that affects both men and women and can significantly impact physical, emotional and psychological well-being. Held at An-Naura Hall, Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex, the event was officiated by Dr Muhd Hiza Wardy bin Hj Abdul Halim, JPMC’s Director of General Medical Services.
As Brunei Darussalam’s only provider of IVF services, JPMC highlighted the importance of increasing public understanding of infertility and the fertility treatment options available locally. The forum also underscored the need to reduce stigma, encourage early consultation, and promote multidisciplinary, patient-centred fertility care.
In her welcoming remarks, Dr Chitra Karat Consultant Obstetrician, Gynaecologist and Fertility Specialist of JPMC said “Fertility treatment can be a long and challenging journey, and it is not one that should be undertaken alone. This year’s forum also highlights the importance of our Syariah-compliant fertility services, ensuring that treatment options remain accessible and aligned with the values and beliefs of our community.”
The forum featured a multidisciplinary panel comprising Dr Chitra Karat; Faridatul Asyiqin Jeffri, Embryologist; Hoh Shair Li, Dietitian; and Dk Noor Afiqah Pg Kasmirhan, Fertility Counsellor. This collaborative model ensures that fertility care extends beyond medical treatment by recognising the physical, emotional and lifestyle factors that can influence reproductive health.
