The Jerudong Park Medical Centre Embraces Breastfeeding Week

Saturday, 4th August 2018 – The Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) hosted a Public Breastfeeding Forum held yesterday, 3rd of August 2018 at the Empire Hotel & Country Club, officially titled, “Supporting Breastfeeding, Foundation of Life”, in conjunction with the World Breast Feeding Week annually celebrated from 1st August to 7th August with this year’s theme “Breastfeeding, Foundation of Life”. The forum is organised by Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) and in collaboration with Medicorp Sdn Bhd with the aim to highlight the importance of working together to protect, promote and support breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding provides young infants with the nutrients they need for development and growth. The World Health Organization (WHO) have emphasized on the advantages of breastfeeding and how it can reduce child mortality, with a recommendation to practice breastfeeding for at least 6 months, which has been evidently shown and studied by WHO.

Dr Siti Khadijah Ismail, Consultant in Obstetrician and Gynaecologist of JPMC provided various interesting facts, shared Brunei statistical figures and stresses that breast feeding prevents hunger and malnutrition in all its forms and endures food security for babies even in times of crises. 

The public forum also had an invited guest who talked about, “Exclusive Breastfeeding Benefit for Healthier and Smarter Baby” by Dr Noroyono Wibowo, Head of Maternal Fetal Medicine Division and Manager of Labour Gynaecologic Emergency Ward at Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital, Bunda Hospital, Jakarta Pusat.

The forum included a discussion by JPMC mothers, allowing participants to engage in an interactive talk on how they overcome their breastfeeding challenges and how have JPMC doctors and qualified lactation nurses have helped them tremendously throughout their journey. 

Lactation Massage and Infant Massage information booths were available on site and have helped and taught the guests massage lactation techniques and even demonstrated infant massage to relief colic for free. 

The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinic is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm and every Saturday from 8am to 12noon. The services offered in the Obstetrics division include Antenatal Screening Tests Including: First and Second Trimester Screening, Antenatal Classes, Infant Massage Classes, Family Planning Clinic and Post Natal Clinic services; The Services offered in the Gynaecology division include General Gynae Check-ups, Trans Abdominal & Trans Vaginal Ultrasound as well as Major & Minor Surgeries including Laparoscopy Surgery and Hysteroscopy Abdominal & Vaginal Pelvic Floor Repair.
